Polylabs wins “Chem Start-up 2019” award

Bio polyol production company Polylabs has won 1st place in “Chem Start-up 2019”. Event was held in Cologne, Germany and from all the applications only the 12 best chemistry start-ups were invited to the final.

Apart from being recognized as Europe’s best chemistry start-up, Polylabs received a special price from Henkel – a visit to corporate HQ to talk about a possible cooperation in various polyurethane projects.

“Polyurethane has been produced from petroleum products since the 1940s. In its five years of existence, Polylabs has made tremendous progress, from small-scale laboratory product samples to industrial scale manufacturing,” comments Kristian Grundstock, founder and CEO of Polylabs.

Polylabs will continue its work towards bio based polyol manufacturing and in addition to current bio polyols, which are more suited for rigid foam applications, is planning to increase product portfolio to include bio polyols for other applications as well.

Key Features of Cradle-to-Gate:
  • Cradle: Refers to the extraction of raw materials or the beginning of the product’s lifecycle.
  • Gate: Refers to the point when the product leaves the manufacturing facility, ready for delivery.

This model includes:

  1. Raw Material Footprint: Emissions from sourcing and producing raw materials.
  2. Transportation Footprint: Emissions from transporting raw materials to the production site.
  3. Production Footprint: Emissions from manufacturing processes.

Exclusions: Cradle-to-Gate does not include downstream processes like product use, end-of-life disposal, or recycling.

Advantages of Cradle-to-Gate Calculations:
  • Provides a focused view of the manufacturing process’s environmental impact.
  • Aligns well with suppliers and manufacturers who are responsible for the production phase only.
  • Easier to calculate and verify compared to full lifecycle assessments (Cradle-to-Grave or Cradle-to-Cradle).
